25 May 2007 - Employability Fest at Bangor Academy

Anything you can do....

Education for Employability is one area in the Revised Curriculum for Northern Ireland that will be introduced in all schools from September 2007. It aims to equip students with a "can do" attitude in addition to the other skills required to be successful in the world of work. In the spirit of encouraging these employability skills, we welcomed the Army to Castle Campus to set up a series of testing challenges designed to push Year 10 well beyond their comfort zone.

Bridging the Gap between School and the World of Work

Students worked in groups to develop team work, leadership and problem solving skills. They were set "command tasks" such as building a bridge, scaling a climbing tower, survival cookery and target practice on the rifle range. The students who participated enjoyed the experience. Many learned that they have skills and strengths that they can use and develop as they start to bridge the gap between education and the job market they have to enter when they leave school. You may not immediately associate climbing to the top of a 20 ft tower with a normal careers lesson, but it is one way to learn about the way in which you tackle fear or trepidation, control nerves or react to a challenge.

CCEA brings Employers and Schools Together

Employability Fest was organised by CCEA to encourage a culture of employability in schools. It brings employers and schools together so that we can develop our students into valuable employees or employers of the future. Bangor Academy didn't need to be asked twice to take part!
