26 Jun 2009 - Canon Tyney Retires After Forty Years of Service on the Board of Governors

Canon Tyney marked the occasion of his retirement from forty years of service on the Board of Governors at Bangor Academy and Sixth Form College at a special luncheon in the school this week.

Bangor Academy staff, the Board of Governors and Stanton Sloan (SEELB Chief Executive) all attended to thank this long serving board member and chairman for his committed, voluntary contribution to the running of Bangor Academy.

Canon Tyney is a very familiar face to generations of students at Bangor Girls’ High School, and latterly Bangor Academy, and has been unstinting in his support of the school.

Over the years he has attended countless Board of Governors meetings; Mr Hyndman has calculated over 170 just since the amalgamation! He has congratulated thousands of students at 40 prize distributions, interviewed hundreds of teachers, faithfully attended annual events like the Carol Service and Candlelit Supper and commiserated, rejoiced, encouraged, supported, reassured, laughed, mourned and celebrated with us along the way. Whatever has happened, whenever it has happened – he has been there!

Bangor Academy Principal, Billy Hyndman, spoke of Canon Tyney’s generous and conscientious contribution to the Academy’s school community as he wished him a long, happy and well-earned retirement.

Along with a holiday voucher from pupils and staff, Mr Hyndman presented Canon Tyney with a memento of his share in the school’s history; an old wooden science stool, saved from the original school site on Castle Street and carved with the Gryphon to make a unique plaque.

The South Eastern Education Board’s Chief Executive, Stanton Sloan, reiterated the message of gratitude to Canon Tyney for his years of dedicated service, especially during the amalgamation with Gransha Boys’ High School and  as the new building on Castle Park Road was planned and constructed.

Everyone at Bangor Academy would like to wish Canon Tyney a long and happy retirement.
